Source:History of the ancient Ryedales, and their descendants in Normandy, Great Britain, Ireland, and America, from 860 to 1884 : comprising the genealogy and biography says it questions various dates for this family, though it claims the dates reported reflect the records accurately, and the reasons for doubt are not given. [In later sections, it does say that Patience is bp. 1775, but b. 1785, which would clearly seem to be a clerical error if true. However, Matthias and Elizabeth seem to have attended the church in Buxton from 1774 on, and I cannot find a baptism of Patience in 1775 or 1785? John is shown b. 1779, but not bp. until 1782, which raises the possibility that his birth could be around 1782, right in the middle of the gap discussed below. Also, the Buxton church shows a daughter Rachel bp. 1780 which this source does not list. Given the uncertainty about John, could 1779 be Rachel's birth date?] This source does say there are six children to each marriage, and the recorded date of the 2nd marriage in 1788 does fall between the sixth and seventh child it lists for this father [unless you add a daughter Rachel, in which case there are seven children in the first marriage]. The set of dates listed here are certainly feasible for busy parents. The large gap between John and Patience seems strange, and without the benefit of a record for the second marriage, one would be tempted to assume the mother died and the father remarried in this gap. (This source tells the story of how John was sent to live with his grandparents in Hollis, a situation that might likely arise out his mother dying.) However, church records show the second marriage occurred in 1788.
