Surnames: FALLS, FAULS, FAWLS,

I am researching the FALLS/FAWLS/FAULS family. They settled on the Catawba River near Lincoln County in the 1700s. The first settler was Thomas Falls. He had a son James Falls who married Rachel Clayton in Rowan County in 1772. I am interested in the origin of the family and their arrival in N.C. Am also curious as to whether James Falls may have fought in the Revolutionary War. The family reportedly was in the vicinity of King's Mountain and Fallston as well. and Fallston as well.

Betsey NEILL (also probably the daughter of Margaret NEILL); Sarah Scott NEILL (also probably the daughter of Marget NEILL); Sarah CLAYTON (not sure which son she belongs to; and Lambert OLIPHANT (at this point I assume that his mother died before 1783 when it appears his father married again) I have information on many descendants but I am particularly interested in proving George CLAYTON's (1723-1786) father. s (1723-1786) father.

NEILL/FALLS/CLAYTON

Surnames: NEILL, FALLS, CLAYTON, CLINTON

James NEILL who married Hannah CLAYTON was the son of William NEILL and Mary (Polly) CLINTON. William's brother Andrew was the father of Sarah NEILL who married Andrew FALLS. The father of William and Andrew NEILL was also named William NEILL. The mother was named Sarah, but her maiden name is unknown to us at this time. It is possible that she was Sarah FALLS. This speculation is based on the fact that brothers William and Andrew NEILL each named a son Gilbraith/Gilbreath Falls NEILL. Also, William's and Andrew's *brother* James stated in his pension application that he had served under his uncle, Gilbreath FALLS. It also appears that Robert NEILL who married Margaret CLAYTON was the son of John NEILL, another brother of William and Andrew.

With the close association of these families over several generations, it seems likely that the wife of the elder William NEILL could be a FALLS. But "likely" isn't proof! Can someone shed some light on this problem?
