St Aubyn, R[ecto]r | This Marriage was solemnized between us | John Drake | in the Presence of us | William Marshall | Susan Colman her X mark | Grace Alger her X mark |
Whilst the bride's name here is Susan, this is considered likely to be an error. The couple who were having children at Bere Ferrers between the late 1840s and mid 1860s always appear in their children's baptisms and in the censuses as John and Elizabeth, whilst the birth index always give the mother's maiden name as Coleman or Colman. This is the only marriage of a Drake and Colman in the right area around this time, and John's details are fully consistent with the man who lived in Bere Ferrers: occupation shoemaker and father being a labourer called John Drake.
