John Converse, of Billerica, and Mrs. Lydia Batchelder, of Woburn, May 20, 1831.

  2.   In summary: It is speculated based on name, age and lack of contradicting evidence, that John Converse b. 1761, m. 1783 Susanna Tay, then m. 1831 Lydia (Carter?) Batchelder and d. 1833. There is no direct evidence that these potentially 3 John Converses are indeed the same man.

Source:Pierce, Frederick Clifton. Batchelder, Batcheller Genealogy does appear to mention this marriage, or offer much help on possible Lydia Batchelders.

The probate shows John died in the three months prior to August 1833. In 1834, Lydia Converse of Wilmington m. William Butters. Source:Butters, George. Genealogical Registry of the Butters Family says this was William's second marriage, and he was quite old, b. 1760. This suggests Lydia was quite old and, assuming this was John's widow, probably a widow when she married John Converse in 1831. No obvious answers present themselves.

A Lydia Batchelder of Reading m. 1826 a Jacob Weston of Woburn, clearly not this woman [this marriage does not appear to be in Pierce]. However the Lydia Batchelder who married John Converse is of Woburn, so it suggests itself that she might be the mother of Jacob Weston's wife, widowed, and so living with her daughter.

There is no sign of the birth of a daughter Lydia Batchelder to a mother named Lydia and her husband for 1790 to 1820 according to americanancestors.org database of vital records. Inspecting Reading VRs, the are three likely looking Batchelder men who died prior to 1833.

Joseph, d. 58 in 1824, is thought to have married Hannah Trull [Pierce #626].

There is a "Mr. Batchelder", a. 60 in 1824, which is too vague. [The death date does not appear to be specified anywhere by Pierce, so presumably he did not know who it was. Simeon b. 1764, Pierce #511, wrote his will in 1836, probated 1842, so it is not him. Jacob Batchelder b. 1765, Pierce #1114, no details in Pierce, but m. Nabby Thompson, moved to Lyndeborough, NH, and d. 1814 per History of Lyndeborough, and Reading records, so it is not him.]

And there is a Nathaniel Batchelder, a. 59, "Killed in the woods alone" in 1829, so born about 1770. The interesting thing is that a Nathaniel Batchelder m. 1799 Lydia Carter of Woburn. So this looks very promising. [The birth record in 1770 lists his parents as Nathaniel Jr. and Mary, so this would probably be Pierce's #1113, s/o Nathaniel Bachelder and Mary Emerson, with no birth date or details provided by Pierce.]

The only Lydia Carter found in Woburn, is the daughter of Jabez Carter and Lydia Dean, b. 1763.
