  2.   Source:Ward, Andrew Henshaw. Genealogical History of the Rice Family : Descendants of Deacon Edmund Rice, p. 43, says a different Hannah Rice, d/o Phineas, m. (1) 20 Oct 1735 John Barber, and in 1770 "was the wife of Israel Stevens of Grafton". The second part is correct. (Ward notes that the father Phineas moved to Grafton. Also see Source:Pierce, Frederick Clifton. History of Grafton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, from Its Early Settlement by the Indians in 1647 to the Present Time,, p. 557) However, she must have married Israel Stevens prior to 1732 when the baptism of their son Joseph is recorded in Grafton VRs (and probably before 1730 when a son Jacob is born in Stow to "Israel and Hannah" Stevens). Ward cites no evidence in proposing the first marriage, nor is a will of the father mentioned. There is no marriage record of Israel Stevens, but there is a marriage record for Hannah Barber showing her marrying, not Israel Stevens, but Dea. Adams Stone, after the death of John Barber in 1762. So it appears Ward was wrong.
  3.   It would appear that the most likely candidate for this John Barber is the son of George and Ann Barber of Medfield, b. 27 Aug 1708, but confirmation is needed. Source:Jameson, Ephraim Orcutt. Biographical Sketches of Prominent Persons, and the Genealogical Records of Many Early and Other Families in Medway, Mass.,, p. 120, says "George and Ann Barber had a son, John, b. Aug. 27, 1708, m. Sept. 8, 1725, Hannah Ellis. John and Hannah (Ellis) Barber had a daughter, Abigail, b. Oct. 31, 1736." But the name of the wife is clearly a typo: Medway VRS show Hannah Ellis m. on that same date John Tailor. A marriage in 1725 would mean John was only 18, not of legal age. Meanwhile the birth of the daughter Abigail is more in line with the marriage to Hannah Rice in 1735 than a marriage in 1725. Besides Abigail 1736, Medfield VRs show Hannah 1737. Other children born to "John and Hannah" Barber include: Worcester VRs show John 1742, twins Oliver and Samuel 1745, Nathan 1747, Ephraim 1748; Sudbury VRs show Silas b. 1754. Assuming these are all the same family, there are still plenty of gaps for more children.
