Research Needed

There is evidence showing that both Jeremiah and his father Jeremiah had a wife named Hannah, so further research is needed to determine if this marriage is the father or the son. It is here given to the son (the children listed on this page belong to the son) because that seems to be the prevailing opinion and the dates fit easily.

But this could easily be the second marriage for the father. There is a baptism in 1717 in the Ipswich VRs for an unnamed child of Jeremy. All other records in Ipswich belong to the son. If this baptism is a child of the son, then the marriage on this page probably belongs to the father, with the implication that the son married earlier to a different woman named Hannah. A deed below refers to the father's "present wife Hannah" which often indicates a second marriage, so there is some reason for thinking this is a reasonable possibility. Identifying Hannah Lamson may be useful is deciding if she married the father or son

Chaplin book has errors

Source:Chaplin, Ann Theopold. Bucknam - Buckman Genealogy is not accessible online. However, somebody has apparently put scans of a small set of pages online, here, that appear to address the two Jeremiahs. Some of the following comments will refute certain assertions presented there based on a survey of deeds in Essex and Worcester counties for Jeremiah and various family members. This appears to be the only real coverage of these two men, but is obviously somewhat flawed.

One obvious error is that a son John bp. 1717 is given to Jeremiah Jr. even though his only marriage is shown as 1720 and no commentary indicates the possibility of a previous marriage. The coverage given John isn't online to see 1) why it is thought that his name is John since the published record of his baptism has no name; 2) why he is thought to belong to Jeremiah Jr. since Jeremiah is not represented as being married yet; 3) what further records there may be of this John since no evidence of him has been found in the deed survey summarized below.

Because of the uncertainty over who this marriage belongs to, this discussion has been placed here. Ironically, more of this information may be about the father than the son. Some day a page may be created for the father, but right now there is so much uncertainty, it seems like that would have a large danger or giving false information.

Father had wife Hannah

Essex deed Vol. 79, p. 135 Jeremiah Buckman of Lexington Carpinter [the father was Carpenter and Housewright, the son was Cordwainer and later yeoman], with wife Hannah signing, sold land in Ipswich in 1732. [Note: Chaplin uses this deed to claim a wife Sarah. This seems to be a clear misreading of the deed, as the wife's name in this deed is given as Hannah, and could not reasonably be interpreted as Sarah???] Additionally, the father's wife was named Hannah when his wife and two sons requested an appointment of a guardian for him, as a person non compos mentis (not capable of managing his affairs and vulnerable to being "imposed on and reduced to difficulty" (Worcester Probate 8735). [Note: the Chaplin book gives the date of inventory, 19 Aug 1747, as the date of death of the father. However, this inventory was only to establish the estate that the guardian was responsible for, and was not indicative of the father's death. The son was referred to as Jeremiah Jr. until 21 Jan 1758 (Worcester Deed Vol. 39, p. 486), which probably indicates the father was still alive on that date.]

If this marriage belongs to the father, that means his children were born to an earlier wife. No records seem to name her, and the births of the children don't seem to be recorded.

Son had wife Hannah

Two children of the son have baptisms listed in the Beverly VRs giving their mother's name as Hannah (Jeremiah and Hannah). No other record of the name of the son's wife has been noticed.

Important deeds

There are additional deeds which have not been listed here.

Essex deed Vol. 58, p. 80 27 Mar 1731: Agreement between Thomas Knowlten of Ipswich Housewright and Jeremiah Buckman Jun'r of Beverly Cordwinder by virtue of power of attorney from his father Jeremiah Buckman of Ipswich Housewright agreeing on a boundary between lot 84 and lot 85 because "some of ye Bounds are Decayed". As noted above, this shows how the father is variously known as a Carpenter or Housewright, the son as Cordwainer, or later, Yeoman.

Essex deed Vol. 79, p. 135 mentioned above, naming father's wife Hannah.

Worcester deed Vol. 3, p. 208 19 Oct 1732: Jeremiah Buckman of Sutton Cordwainer for £70 to Jason Wait of Sutton Husbandman one half of a saw mill. Several additional agreements at various places as to how much water feeding Jeremiah's property that Jason Wait could use (3:209, 5:401, 17:369).

Vol. 10, p. 186 27 Nov 1732: Jeremiah Bucknum of Sutton Cordwainer for 10 shillings conveys to father Jeremiah Bucknum of Lexington Housewright one half of a parcel of 110 acres bourght of Nathaniel Jones of Sutton.

Vol. 5, p. 256 1 Aug 1734: Jeremiah Bucknum Housewright & Jeremiah Bucknum Jr Cordwainer both of Sutton for £200 convey to Thomas Stearns and Gershom Rice Jr. and Daniel Biglow yeomen a house on 110 acres in Sutton purchased of Nathan'll Jones in 1731. Vol. 10, p. 866 appears to be a duplicate.

Vol. 18, p. 98 20 Oct 1743: Jeremiah Bucknum of Sutton House Carpenter for £20 conveys to son Joseph Bucknum of Sutton weaver house where I now Dwell with 60 acres, on condition of paying certain sums to my daughters as explained in an associated mortgage. Mortgage is at Vol. 17, 277 accounts some property to pay for support of Jeremiah and "his Present Wife Hannah", most of the remaining value Joseph to pay his four sisters namely Martha Rogers, Hannah Masters, Sarah Dike and Deborah Hull in equal amounts. Vol. 22, p. 406 3 Mar 1746/47: Joseph Bucknum of Oxford Weaver conveys this property for £20 to Daniel Bucknum of Sutton Cordwainer, Daniel to fulfill payments and services.

Vol. 23, p. 395 3 Mar 1746/47: lists the children of the father selling their part of the estate to their brother Daniel: Jeremiah Backhum Jun'r of Sutton, Joseph Bucknum of Oxford weaver, Thomas Gould of Sutton Husbandman & Hannah his wife, Richard Rogers of Oxford School Master & Martha his wife, John Dike of Sutton Labourer and Sarah his wife, James Hall of Worcester & Deborah his wife and Mary Hooker widow of Marblehead.

Vol. 39, p. 486 21 Jan 1758: Jeremiah Buckman Jun'r of Sutton yeoman for 5 shillings conveys to son David Buckman of Sutton Laborer "for his advancement in the world and as the sum of £137-6-8 towards his portion out of my Estate", three parcels. David apparently returned the parcels about a year later and they were eventually given to Jeremiah's son Isaiah in 1764. However, the significant feature is the use of Junior in the name of the son. This is the last deed where this was noticed and probably is about when the father died.

Vol. 58, p. 357 22 Apr 1766: Jeremiah Bucknam of Sutton Yeoman for £40 conveys to Isaiah Bucknam of Sutton Husbandman a dwelling house and 90 acres in Sutton reserving to himself and wife the westerly end of the house and one half of the orchard during their natural lives. Note: the Chaplin book seems to think a deed 45:60 is the last deed executed by Jeremiah, but this clearly seems to be a father deeding land to a son while reserving use of it, suggesting he was still alive in 1766. There are also later deeds which 60:170 in 1767, 67:150 in 1771 and 70:565 in 1773 which appear to be him, but the fate of his son Jeremiah has not been investigated, so doubt remains.
