James and Hannah were married in 1882 in Ontario, Canada. In 1883 they moved to Nebraska, then to Reynold, Illinois where they farmed for a number of years. They raised seven children. In March, 1912, they returned to Canada along with two of their sons, James and George, and their daughter, Agnes. They rented a farm north east of Marshall on the south side of the gully. They came by train bringing with them: 7 horses, 3 cows, and some machinery. They were able to sow 60 acres of oats that summer. They purchased land on the north side of the gully (SE1/4 3-50-26 W3), at $18.00 per acre and built their home. Taxes in those days were around $9.60 per quarter. The land was all raw, so they hired a man to break 60 acres with a tractor. Their first neighbors were Roseland, Holts, Beamishes, Heaps, Sharrotts, Tingvalls, Thompsons, and Duclos. |
