Lawson Goodin (Goodwin) and Nancy Goodin Vaught are proven children of Mary Dugger Goodin Smith. They were named as such in the Will of Jacob Smith (their step-father) and a letter dated 13 Feb 1836 from Lawson to his sister Celia Smith George also proves it.

There is family tradition that Lawson and Nancy were not children of Drury Goodwin, but that Samuel Hall was their father and they were born after the death of Drury Goodwin, but before Mary married Jacob Smith.

This may be correct. There is an 1823 record showing that "Lawson Dugger" legally changed his name to "Lawson Goodwin" (Acts of Tennessee 1796-1830, D part 3, 1823-28-103.1, shared by Dawn Oftel). I have not seen the original record so I'm not sure what else it may reveal.
