Analysis. Wife of David Cowan (1)
person:David Cowan (1) This is the David Cowan who married a Jane (not Jane Wright) and lived in Sevier County KY.

Notes

See:Notebook. Cowan's in Chalkley's Chronicles, Alphabetical and Date Ordered;

David left a deposition in Augusta County: "David Cowan, aged 55 years, deposes in "Jefferson County", 8th November, 1808. David married James Wright's sister.

From Washington County Deed records quoted as "Washington Co., Virginia Deed Book I, p. 33, January 20, 1786... [Not seen, fide Family Treemaker genealogy

"David Cowan and wife Jane late of the county of Washington... This is to certify...two of the Justices of Sevier County... Jane Cowan...4th day April AD 1786, went to the house of David Cown (sic), husband of said Jane Cowan..."

These two items are sometimes taken together to identify the wife of David Cowan of Sevier county as "Jane Wright". That would seem to be a mistake. David Cowan of Sevier County (person:David Cowan (1) did marry a Jane, but her last name is unknown. The David Cowan (Person:David Cowan (30)) who deposed in Jefferson County married a woman whose last name was Wright, but whose first name is not known. The deposition does not indicate the state in which the deposition was given. There is a Jefferson County in both Tennessee and Kentucky. Both Tennessee and Kentucky were admitted to the Union before 1808, so it is not clear which one was being referred to in the depostion. Most likely, Jefferson County KY was meant, given that it formed from Virginia, whereas Tennessee was originally part of North Carolina.
