Welcome

Welcome to WeRelate, your virtual genealogical community. We're glad you have joined us. At WeRelate you can easily create ancestor web pages, connect with cousins and other genealogists, and find new information.

Video Tour

We strongly recommend that you spend a few minutes taking our video tour. It provides a brief overview of how to use the features of WeRelate. A little time spent here may save you time later. There are also in-depth text tutorials available from the Help button.

Create Webpages

The next thing to do is launch Family Tree Explorer, then select File in the Family Tree Explorer menu and give your family tree a name. You can either upload your GEDCOM or create person and family pages one at a time. To upload your GEDCOM, select File in the Family Tree Explorer menu and then click on Import and choose the GEDCOM file to import. The system will create an editable web page for each person and family in your GEDCOM. To create a page manually, select Add in the Family Tree Explorer menu and click on Add new person; enter the given (first name) and surname (last name), select Add, then fill in the blanks and save.

The Family Tree Explorer is a Flash application and will need to use some space in your computer to cache the files. That's computer talk for "If you store some ancestor page information on your computer, you will be able to view more pages faster. Otherwise, the system has to fetch each page every time you edit or look at it. This would make navigating your tree very slow.

Connect with other genealogists

You should always sign in when you are editing or adding pages. Use the signature button (second button from the right in the menu bar above the edit box) to sign your comments on discussion pages. That way others with similar interests can find you. If you click on the blue user name on any page, you will go to that person's home page. You can leave a message on his/her Discussion page. The Discussion page button is in the light green second level menu bar above.

Shared research pages

Shared research pages act like specialized message boards. Be careful to use only one name spelling and one location in each field; do not use abbreviations. Including postal codes and multiple spellings, names, or locations in these fields will cause your pages to be improperly indexed. It will make it harder for your cousins to find your pages and work with you. For more information see Shared research pages.

==Research on a limited budget==

Hello RiddleR:

Your page is the first I have seen to contain a mention of a budget - what a great point to make. One of the important aspects of how WeRelate works is that it is free, in two ways. First, it obviously doesn't cost you any money to register, read, or edit the site. The other sense, though, is that it is free as in freedom/libre. Part of what a site like this one does is force people to think about why they pay for information. Is it because it is the only place on the planet where the information can be found? That's really rare. More often you are being asked to pay for something that could be free, but may be inconvenient, like ordering the microfilm rather than paying to see it online right now. The goal here is to make free information truly convenient and turn more people on to family history. Welcome to the site and welcome to genealogy! --Brad Patrick 14:06, 15 April 2007 (MDT)

Added Some Info to the Riddle Family Tree [25 February 2009]

My Name is Randy Clinton. Thanks for the great work on our family history. I am the 51 year old son of Ruth Jordan Clinton. She is the daughter of James Jordan and Rose E. Riddle Jordan. My Grand Mother, Rose E. Riddle, is the daughter of Robert Daniel Riddle and Mary J. Holmes. I have an older brother and younger sister and I became the family historian. My mothers' sister, Aunt Peggy Jordan Clinton, who passed, did alot of research on the family history. She used some references from "The Journal of Negro History" (1942), and I have most of her work. I will continue to work facts and storys as I get them. We lost a ton of historic material in a house fire in 1964 in Roncevert, WVa. when my Grand mother's house burned down. There was alot of Riddle history and pictures that went up in flames. I do have one old picture dating around 1900 of a large group of people in front of an old school house for negros in Roncevert, WVa. In the picture is a pretty clear view of Robert Daniel Riddle, his brother and possibly his father Henry Riddle???. There is also Robert Daniel Riddle's children in the picture, My Grand Mother Rose E. Riddle, My Grand Uncle John A. Riddle, and other Riddle's that I would need help identifing. I would like to show you this picture.

Hi Randy,

I'm happy to hear from you. Your edits look good. I hope you have more. I'd be very interested in seeing a photograph of Robert D. Riddle and anything else you'd care to share. I'll contact you direct offline.

Next step: Review your GEDCOM [27 February 2010]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded riddles_27feb2010_exp.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Reviewing your gedcom [21 March 2010]

Hello, I am a volunteer admin here at WeRelate. I noticed that your riddles_27feb2010_exp.ged gedcom has been uploaded. The system is new and might be a little confusing at first. Do you need any help with the review process? If you were not aware of the review process, click on this link to go to the review page. You can come and go as you have time.

WeRelate is an active community of genealogists staffed by volunteers. Our mission is help people to collaborate on common ancestors. The review process will connect you with other genealogists researching common ancestors. Your gedcom cannot be uploaded until you have checked the warnings and possible matches with common ancestors. The warnings will tell you if someone died before they married/were born, etc. You can correct the page in the lower window by clicking on the edit link. You must look at every warning and every suggested match. You need to read through the warnings and review the suggested family matches. For each family match, please mark it as a match or not a match.

Let me know if you need help getting started. You should be aware that Gedcoms left unreviewed/uploaded will be deleted after ten days. Thank you, --Jennifer (JBS66) 07:05, 15 March 2010 (EDT)

Hi,

I don't know if you are aware that all gedcom uploads must be reviewed before the pages are uploaded. The program has changed since you loaded your first gedcom. The system will analyze your gedcom and suggest matches with existing pages so you can connect with your cousins. It will also point out data issues, like when someone died before their child was born. Sometimes, there is nothing wrong with the data, like a child born before the wedding or an old man fathering a child. I have a 71 year old who fathered his 21st child. You don't have to change data, just look at the warning. You can choose to correct the mistakes in the lower window by clicking on edit, or make the corrections to the pages at your leisure. If you need help, please feel free to contact me. You uploaded your gedcom on February 27. You can process it at the link noted above.

I usually delete unprocessed gedcoms that have been left in the queue for more than 10 days. I will need to delete your gedcom if it is not processed by Mar 25. Please contact me in the next few days if you are working on it and need more time. :) --Judy (jlanoux) 23:48, 21 March 2010 (EDT) (WeRelate volunteer)

Your gedcom file was removed [28 March 2010]

When files appear to have been abandoned we must delete them after a reasonable time. It appears that you may have deleted your existing tree and then immediately loaded a new file as you have many matches to non-existent pages. Please try uploading your file again. You will now have a lot less work to do in review. Thanks. --Judy (jlanoux) 12:27, 28 March 2010 (EDT) (WeRelate volunteer)
