Message for Netta

Netta, Thank you for responding about Damon Torbett, and the story of his death. I do not have any other information about this story or Damon's partner, Mr. Hood. I would like to know the version of the story that you have about this incident. Also if you have any info on the brother mentioned in the story I would appreciate having that too. I have found no record of Damon having a brother Fred in any census or other document. This story is the only mention of Fred as a brother of Damon. I know that Damon's father, John, was married at least twice and had children of both wives, but no Fred among them. Please let me hear from you about this Jim Tarbet--Tarbet 14:02, 13 July 2011 (EDT)

Damon Torbett [14 July 2011]

Netta,

Thank you for your response re; Damon Torbett. As I said I have no knowledge about the story about Damon's death, but it's interesting to hear what you had on the subject. Besides the part about who killed him, is the statement that he was playing with his "brother" Frank. Because the word "Playing" was used, it seems to make more sense that Frank was his son, not his brother. But even that doesn't rule out his having a brother named frank, but like I said, I've found no record of him in his father's house. If Frank was his son, it makes the story even more tragic, to have a little boy standing next to him when he was gunned down.

I think this story needs more research. I'm wondering if there might have been a newspaper article written about it, or perhaps a police report, which could be found. I don't know what was available in 1884, Havana, Arkansas. I'll see what I can find if you will do the same we might just come up with a more accurate story.

Have a great day

Damon Torbett [16 July 2012]

Netta, I receintly reviewed your note to me about Damon Torbett in WeRelate. In reviewing my notes on Damon I noticed some questions I had put there myself. I had noted that his mother was unknown, but now have his mother as Margaret Hall. I also had questioned the spelling of his last name. noting that one of his sons had erected a monument for him spelling his name as Torbett, and another son had it removed and replaced, spelling his name Torbitt.

I don't know where this information came from, but am hoping that you can help clear it up. Was his mother Margaret Hall? How did he spell his last name?

The two census records I have found don't really help as the last name is spelt Torbet in 1870, and Tolbert in 1880. Do you know the correct spelling? About his death. The note I have says he was playing with a small boy named Fred, and called his brother. But Damon didn't have a brother named Fred. He did however have a son named Fred. Could the child be his son?

Thanks
