Harrisons [15 March 2017]

Hi there -

Welcome. I got some change notifications on some of the pages that you edited today, and I was wondering if you could explain the process you went through on John Harrison and Elizabeth Irwin? It looks like you removed all the pages from the family page, then added in new ones? Were you editing by hand, or did something go wrong with a merge? There were a lot of watchers on those pages, so you're probably starting to see them changed back, but I thought I would check in and see if there's something we can help figure out. Thanks! --Amelia 04:13, 15 March 2017 (UTC) (volunteer admin)

Hi. I am trying to help connect our ancestry without "interfering" with history.

My great great great grandfather's father was John Scott Harrison. My great, great grandfather, George William Harrison was born in 1824, many years before the official marriage of his parents.

He was included into the family, after the marriage, but not publically known as their child. John Scott visited with George and also his grandchildren. John Scott Harrison helped arrange the meeting of his granddaughter, Katie Marie Harrison with her future husband, Ralph Jackson.

George William Harrison respected the need for privacy and always honored that, to protect the family. That respect has been passed down as well.

It is not our intention that we be listed as a relative of the "President", so that is why I deleted it off when I noticed it came up that way.

I love the use of your site, but disappointed that I may not be able to use it, if this is the case. Any suggestions?

  • I only included this as an explanation. This information is not to be released outside of this conversation.

Your help is greatly appreciated. JH--JesseHarrison 18:56, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for responding. A couple things. First, this is a public page, so if you want to discuss via email, free free to contact me directly (More > Email This User). Second, regarding George William, you'll either need to share the source on the parentage, or remove the link to the parents. Otherwise, given that none of the major sources about this family acknowledge this child, combined with the fact that it's a presidential family that people want to be affiliated with, people are going to assume there's no real evidence. Finally, the issue I messaged you about was actually broader. From what I can see of your edits, you went to a page that had a lot of information on it, removed all the people connected to it, and then added in new records for people that had much less information. That's not how it's supposed to work - and what you did was much more difficult than it could have been -- so I was wondering what confusion caused it and how we can address. What should happen is that you add information you have that is not already there by editing the person pages, and if you don't have more information, all you do is watch the page, and follow the tree down until your ancestors are missing, at which point your add them. We generally don't remove information or family members from a page unless there's an affirmative reason to (it's wrong, it's being rewritten for clarity, etc.). There's only one page per family because it's all shared, so it's not possible, for example, to list George as the son of John without also listing him as the brother of Benjamin. Hope that helps!--Amelia 19:08, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
