Information added to page of Thomas Bell [23 March 2013]

Hi Harvey, I noticed some information added to the Person Page of Thomas Bell. This appears to be an obituary of his brother David Bell. Since it makes no mention of Thomas, was there a reason you've added it to Thomas' page instead of David's? Looks like it should probably be moved to David's page.... Also, you might want to add a heading listing it as an obituary, similar to this:

Obituary [24 March 2013]

Best regards,

Hi Harvey, got your message. No problem on the minor mistake, please keep up the good work on the Bells, especially if you are adding primary records. I started the Early Settlers of Augusta County, Virginia project about 3 years ago and many of the early records, but if you see anything that you can prove that is incorrect, feel free to correct. Some of the families I've added had secondary sources and may have errors.

Thanks for helping on this family.

Best regards,

Jim:)

Harvey, I would like your help with two James Bells that have conflicting records across the internet that apparently have confused many Bell researchers. If you can help straighten out their families, I'd really appreciate it:

James Bell of Middle River (est. 1730-1795)
James Bell of Long Glade (abt. 1733-1783)

If you have records to correct their families, it would be greatly appreciated. This is one of my "problem families" that I've tried to correct, but haven't been able to find anyone that has researched them sufficiently to help.

Thanks and best regards,

Jim

Beverley Manor tract of James Bell [25 March 2013]

Hi Harvey, I noticed your message regarding the Beverley Manor tract of James Bell. The Beverley Manor tract Map that I have is dated 1754 and was purchased through the History Museum and Historical Society of Western Virginia.

Even though James Bell's tract is dated "1747", it appears that he actually had acquired this land as early as 1740, as shown in the following record of James Moody, who acquired the 510-acre tract adjoining James Bell to the South:

Pages 155-58. 23-24 July 1740. William Beverley, Esqr., of Essex County to James Moody of Orange County. Lease and release; for ₤15.6. - current money. 510 acres... corner to James Bell... (signed) W. Beverley. Wit: Gibbons Jennings, John Pickens, John Lewis. 24 July 1740. Acknowledged by William Beverley, Gent. [Relinquishment of dower as above, Beverley to Page]. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 4, Dorman, pg. 44].

I have been unable to find the original deed to James Bell in either Orange or Augusta records, but the Orange County deed of Moody above sure seems to prove James Bell had acquired the same Beverley Manor tract as shown on the 1954 Hildebrand Map.....

I'm interested in your comment that you have a "different" Beverley Manor Map dated 1977. I sure would like to get a scan of that map since I've found a few "discrepancies" in Hildebrand's Map that I have. I wonder if Hildebrand had a "corrected version", which you may have? Unfortunately, Mr. Hildebrand passed away several years ago, but I have communicated several times with his son John, who lives in Roanoke, and who gave me permission to utilize his father's maps on WeRelate.

I believe the 230-acre tract of James Callison, that you mentioned is a different tract located just to the northwest of James Bell's tract, as shown on this section of the Hildebrand Map:

If there is any way you can have your 1977 map scanned, I'm sure there are a few Augusta County researchers (including myself) that would like to compare it with the one we've been using...

Let me know if you have any other information.

Best regards,

Hi Harvey, got your message. The map you're using is the same map that is currently available from the History Museum and Historical Society of Western Virginia, dated 1954. You'll see the date in the south-east quadrant. Feel free to add whatever records or lineage that you feel is backed up with solid records.

Best regards,

Jim

I apologize for attempting to correct the issues on this site regarding the Bells of Augusta Co. as I stated, I will not attempt to contribute further.

Harvey

Harvey, as I said, there is no problem in "correcting" any information, as long as they are "correct" and the corrections are fact-based and verified with records. I still could use your help on the two different James Bell's listed above, if you can assist.

Thanks much,

Jim
