Next step: Review your GEDCOM [30 August 2011]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Allen werelate.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

GEDCOM Issues - Please Read [31 August 2011]

Hello and welcome to WeRelate. Thank you for submitting your gedcom file. Since I see that you are new here, I took a preliminary look at the file for you. I am afraid that there are MANY problems with your GEDCOM. WeRelate is based on a shared database and creates a web file for each person. In your GEDCOM file, you have many living people which we exclude, thus making what we call "people islands" since these living people are disconnected from the whole file. There are as well many very early people (pre 1700) which we exclude as well from GEDCOM uploads. These people require a more advanced sourcing, etc. We encourage you to hand add these people to WeRelate if you have well sourced information. It also indicates the use of the husbands surname when you did not know the wife's surname. Another issue is the lack of sources such as birth certificates, marriage records, death certificates, Federal census or State Census sources, land records, obit's etc.

As a shared database WeRelate really requires people and family's in your GEDCOM have enough sourcing & identifying information such as dates, locations, sources so another WeRelate who has the same names but not the same ancestors (maybe a nephew named John with a wife who has the same name Mary as his wife of the aunt and uncle of John and Mary for instance) thus making it way too easy to merge the wrong family. There are very few, to no events, or notes containing dates and places which will enable someone to identify the right person. We will NOT be able to use this GEDCOM file.

However, we do encourage you to work on your data and submit a new GEDCOM file with more complete information. Maybe make a copy of your GEDCOM file and break it up with only the deceased and resubmit a smaller one without the living, and with more sources, and or locations. We also strongly encourage the use of sources, or many sources. You may like to browse the existing pages and try creating a few by hand to get familiar with how WeRelate works. A list of recent featured pages is available from the WeRelate home. These will provide some examples of what is possible. And, finally, as a reminder, we do not create pages for living people. If you have any questions about your gedcom, you can reply here. I will be watching your Talk Page. Good Luck, Debbie Freeman, one of the volunteer admin's --DFree 12:48, 31 August 2011 (EDT)
