Next step: Review your GEDCOM [16 January 2015]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded hipskind Family Tree.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Opening your gedcom [21 January 2015]

Your gedcom file lodged with WeRelate is named hipskind Family Tree.ged. Do you have a file of that name on your computer? That is the one you should be working with to make the changes. Once you have made the changes you can upload the revised file again.

Take another look at the screen within WeRelate on the screen where it says there are too many errors. You will notice along the top of the screen some titled tabs. The one you are probably looking at is titled "Overview". The next one is "Warnings". I've had a look at that and I notice that most of the problems are in how you display dates. Altering dates looks like a very long task, but I am sure there are others here in WeRelate who can suggest some find-and-replace macro that could be used in the gedcom itself. (My own programming skills aren't that up to scratch.) In amongst the dates needing correcting are some other errors that you should look at carefully. I notice there are wives who are labelled with the same surname as the husband. Maiden names should be used if known, "unknown" if not. Check again on the ages of children compared with their parents. There are plenty of hints on the tabs below your gedcom. See if you can spot the ones that can improve the file you have attempted to upload.

Thank you for your reply. I am not able to open the ancestry download on my desktop for some reason. I made corrections as far as names are concerned. I was going to try to resubmit the ged file to your site, but am not sure of the correct way to do it. Should I cancel the copy you have on site and then upload the new file? do you have any suggestions as to why I am not able to open the ged file on my desktop?--Bob3453 01:24, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
