Maria Hoornaert [28 dec 2016]

Thank you for pointing out that Charles was married earlier. I was not aware of that.

I have added information from the DTB Haarlem. The transscribed names are indeed similar to the ones you gave. Whether Maria is a daughter from the first or second marriage, remains unclear. For now, I remain with the assumption that she was born to the second marriage. It fits the biology better when she has children into her late thirties (instead of well in her fourties).

If some day a baptism shows up, we can be certain.

best regards,

Hoornaert family [3 jan 2017]

Hello AvitaFide,

Best wishes for 2017 to you!

I want to thank you for your data on Charles Hoornaert and his ancestors and offspring. I stumbled upon Charles while working on my wifes ancestry/pedigree ("kwartierstaat"). He seemed like an interesting figure, so I had noted him as a person of interest for further research at a later time. A slight difficulty is that his life seemed mostly to have been in Haarlem and Deventer. Both towns with large church registers, that haven not been indexed yet. I was planning to do that at a later time in the respective archives (easier for browsing than on FS). With your information it was easy to verify the sources. Apparently you have a lot more on this family. I would appreciate it if you would share it.

As to the name: I take your word for it that Hoornaert is the preferred name. However... it is an error to think that names were butchered in earlier times. The fact is, that standardized names did not exist in the Netherlands (and other countries) before 1800. Actually, the whole language wasn't standardized. You could choose your family name as you liked it and spell it the way you liked it. And anyone could do that to your name. E.g. my mothers familyname is "Ultee", that seems to have been derived from "Houlteau" in Belgium. Maybe Hoornaert is one of the few names that was already stable in the 1500's. Most family names however show a kind of evolution during the centuries before 1800, when this evolution was frozen by Napoleon and his civil administration. It is a sound research practice to note all variants, like you do. Werelate has the possibility to name as many alternatives as you like.

I'm just one of the users of this site. I like the idea of co-operation, working on the ideal of one big world tree. I also like the quality. The people here have an appreciation for research based data, including sources. Maybe you have already been approached by one of the moderators? They usually help getting familiar with the site. As it is wiki based that is something you may have to learn (though not difficult), including some basic rules. Like: feel free to add information and improve where you can. But also have some respect for what is already put in (especially when the data are based on primary sources). In case of uncertainty or conflicting judgements: use a talk page to reach out to the other watchers to resolve it.

If you want to change a name of a page for a person or a family, you can do that by: 1) using the "rename" function on the left. You can change there the name you see on top of the page. Alter it and give a reason why. After that: 2) change the first name under "facts and events" accordingly (by editing the page). And: 3) it is a good and appreciated practice to open a new "alt name" for the name that you removed and was originally put in by someone else, including the source reference.

I have changed your Johannes into a Hoornaert, by merging the persons you and I made (we try to avoid doubles as much as possible). I have also used your information to add some (sourced) persons. It is certainly an interesting family. So if you decide to share your information here by uploading a gedcom file, be sure to know that you will stumble upon some doubles (you are kindly requested to merge them during the process of uploading).

Hope to see more of you!
