d. unm. 1662, hav. been adm. freem. of conn. 1658, and betroth. to Susanna,
only ch. of Henry Cunliffe. Whence the ancest. came is uncert.
Tradit. long assert. the birthright of Devonsh. but a less gen. tradit.
offers the claim to a hamlet far distant in the N. within two miles of
Burnley, Co. Lancaster, and some claim is put forth in favor of Wales.
the Christian name is variously distort. Some make this s. to have
the same name as his f. or rather call the f. Eldad. Others write it
Eldred, wh. might easily be mistak. in the old engrossing hand.
Edward sometimes is proposed, and Eltweed more commonly
appears than any other, but to me it seems the double e. was
meant for oo. JOHN, Salem 1660, mariner, was lost at sea,
says tradit. and his inv. then tak. was very small. JOHN,
Salem, m. 22 July 1674, Mary Cowes, had Mary, b. 13
Oct. 1677; Elizabeth 5 May 1680; Rachel, 29 Nov. 1681; John,
4 Nov. 1683; and Susanna, 20 Feb. 1686, d. in few yrs. and
only one ch. was liv. in June 1691, when w. Mary admin. JOHN,
Boston, shipwright, made his will 14 Apr. 1690, bound to sea, and
gave his prop. to Mary Brookings, prob. d. of John, wh. prov. it 13
Nov. 1691. he was no doubt, a young, unm. man, prob. engag. to m.
the devises. JOSEPH, Westfield, youngest s. of Eltweed, m. 20 June 1677,
Hannah, d. of Richard Lyman. of Northampton, had Joseph, b. 1 Sept.
1678, d. in few wks.; Hannah, 13 Dec. 1679, d. in few days; Hannah,
again, Jan. 1681. d. young; Elizabeth 7 Feb. 1682. d. next yr.; Abigail, 5
Feb. 1684; Medad, 4 Nov. 1686; John, 11 July 1688, d. in few days;
Hannah, again, 2 Apr. 1694; beside sec. Joseph, Noah, and Sarah, of
wh. one or more may have been b. at Colehester, or come bef. Hannah.
He was freem. 1680, but rem. to Colchester, where are descend.
JOSHUA, Northampton, br. of the preced. m. 20 Aug. 1672, Eliz. d. of
Richard Lyman, wh. d. 22 May 1676, had John, b. 2 May 1674, d.
soon; Joshua, 24 Sept. 1675; Eliz. 1677, d. young; Nathaniel, 9 Mar.
1680; Abigail, 23 July 1682, d. young; Lydia, 3 Mar. 1684; and John,
1688, d. young; all exc. the first two by sec. w. Abigail, youngest d. of
Nathaniel Cook of Windsor, m. 9 Jan. 1677. He rem. 1683 to Deerfield,
and d. 16 Oct. 1689. His wid. m. David Hoyt, suffer. in the destr.
of D. 29 Feb. 1704, was carr. to Canada, but came back, and had third
h. Lydia, the d. also came back from Canada, m. Nathaniel Ponder of
Westfield; and both the s. were sufferers, tho. in diff. degr. Nathaniel
was k. by the Ind. 16 July 1698; and Joshua was carr. from D. with his
sec. w. Esther, wh. was k. by the Ind. the day aft. capt. on their way
to Canada, whence he got back, and liv. at Dorchester, had third w.
Repent, wh. d. 22 July 1714, and he got a fourth w. * MEDAD, Northampton,
br. of the preced. m. 21 Nov. 1661, Experience, d. of Henry
Woodward
, had John, b. 24 Aug. 1662; Joseph, 24 Dec. 1664, d. next
yr.; Mehitable, 3 July 1666; Ebenezer, 30 May 1669; Joseph, again
26 June 1672; Medad, 19 June, 1674, d. soon; Eliakim, 10 Aug. 1675,
