from Ipswich, Co. Suff'k. 1634, aged 28, with w. Esther, 22, freem. 4
Mar. 1635, had Hannah, b. 23 Sept. 1636; Elizabeth 3 Sept. 1638, d.
young; Ruth, bur. 17 Dec. 1640; Mary, b. 18 Dec. 1640; John, 1
Jan. 1645; Joseph, 10 Aug. 1646; Daniel, 19 Feb. 1649, prob. H. C.
1666; and Sarah, 25 Sept. 1651; was rep. 1644, 5, 60 and oft. later to
1676 and 7; in 1632 a capt. and d. 10 Oct. 1678, and his wid. d. 21
May 1692. Hannah m. 17 Oct. 1653, Joshua Brooks of Concord;
Mary m. 20 May 1668, Rev. Joseph Estabrook; and Sarah m. the
same day capt. Andrew Gardner of Muddy riv. Of ano. HUGH we
may be led to inq. the resid. by the passage in Drake's Hist. of Boston,
418, of expedit. into the Ind. country, 1676, by one of this name, when
we may justly presume, that our Watertown rep. was too old for such
severe duty. JACOB, Boston, s. of Ralph, prob. the instrument maker,
of wh. Judge Sewall notes the d. 9 Feb. 1695, by w. Rebecca had Elizabeth
b. 29 July 1671, d. soon; Elizabeth again, 23 Apr. 1676; Hannah, 25 May
1678; Jacob, 23 Apr. 1680; Rebecca, 24 Aug. 1681; and Joseph, 9
Feb. 1684. JOHN, the patentee of N. Hampsh by whose pub. spirit,
tho. he never came in person to our country, so much was effect. in its
sett. that he well deserves ment. in this work, d. 26 Nov. 1637, leav.
only ch. Jane to inherit his vexatious principality. She m. John Tufton,
Esquire, had John, wh. d. without issue, as is told by Farmer, and Robert,
who took the name of Mason. JOHN, Dorchester, tho. thot. by
some to have come 1630, with Winthrop prob. came early in 1632, was
in Dec. of that yr. sent as lieut. with 20 men against a pirate at the E.
for wh. in July foll. he was paid £10, and bec. capt. in Nov. aft. was
first on the list of freem. 4 Mar. 1635, and disting. then by title of capt.
rep. 1635 and 6, and this yr. rem. with Warham to Windsor, of great
serv. in milit. and civ. life, finished the Pequot war, in 1637, being in
chief com. rep. 1637 to 41, then Assist. to 59, then dep.-gov. for eight
maj.-gen. and commiss. for the Congr. of N. E. 1647, 54, 5, 6, 9,
and 61. From Windsor he rem. 1647 to Saybrook, thence to first sett.
of Norwich 1659. By first w. wh. d. at W. we kn. not of any ch. but
he took sec. w. in July 1639, nam. Peck, and had, perhaps, Isabel;
certain. Priscilla, b. Oct. 1641; Samuel, July 1644; John, Aug. 1646;
Rachel, Oct. 1648; Ann, June 1650; Daniel, Apr. 1652; and Elizabeth
Aug. 1654; and d. at N. 30 Jan. 1672, in 72d yr. All that the diligence
of Prince, the annalist, could gather to prefix to his Hist. of the Pequot
war may be read in 2 Mass. Hist. Coll. VIII. 122; and later inq. adds
