"Released" meaning? [12 November 2022]

There are several instances in the Volume 1 of this source which read like "Henry Davis released 1885." and "...released to join First Presbyterian Church...." Does "released" generally mean, as described in the introduction, "disowned" or "removed" from a Meeting? --ceyockey 18:33, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

"Disowned" means the community initiated the action. "Released" means he asked to leave.
See Swarthmore glossary for fuller explanations.
