The 25th Newsletter from Reclaim The Records, "Reclaim The Records wins the New York State Birth Index, 1881-1942" (archived version), provides useful information in navigating this set of sources.
- The Internet Archive material is a set of scanned images which are not text searchable
- The records DO NOT include New York City, as this is considered a different jurisdiction
- "This birth index is sorted by year, and then alphabetically by surname within each year. The town of birth is listed, although sometimes shown as an abbreviation, as is the certificate number."
- actually, the alphabetical-by-surname is not followed in all cases
- the article section "Okay, I found a name, now what?" provides advice on how to get a copy of a birth certificate; the resource here is just the INDEX to the birth certificates.
