Established in 2003 by Israeli company MyHeritage. The MyHeritage DNA testing service was established in 2016. "As of 2020, the service supports 42 languages and has more than 50 million users worldwide who have built around 52 million family trees." Purportedly, MyHeritage has a family tree with 13 million people included, based on Geni.com data. However, Geni.com has been deemed by WeRelate to not be a reliable primary source.

The company was acquired by Francisco Partners, an American private equity firm focused on tech companies, in 2021.
