Township of Wolf River

Wolf River is a civil township situated in the west-central part of the county of Doniphan, state of Kansas, United States of America. It is bounded on the north by the township of Iowa, on the east by the township of Center, on the south by the townships of Independence and Union, and on the west by the county of Brown (including its townships of Washington and Robinson).

History

Wolf River was one of the five original civil townships erected at a meeting of the county commissioners on 17 September 1855 after the county was erected the preceding month. It was named after the river which flows through it, which was named after a chief of the Sac tribe.

Boundaries

Originally the township's boundaries were fixed as follows:

Bounded on the north by Iowa Township; on the east by the second range line, running north and south, between Ranges 20 and 21, through Doniphan; on the south by Wayne Township; and on the west by the county line.

On 16 September 1856, the county board caused one and a half miles to be taken from the eastern boundary of the township and attached to the township of Washington.

On 21 June 1859, a change was made and the boundaries were fixed as follows:

Commencing at the northwest corner of Section 6, Town 3, Range 19; thence east to the northeast corner of Section 3, Town 3, Range 20; thence south to the southeast corner of Section 10, Town 4, Range 20; thence west four miles; thence south four miles to the county line; thence west to the southwest corner of the county; thence north to place of beginning.

On 10 July 1878, all that part of the township then lying in the Congressional Town 4, Range 19, was reorganized into the township of Union, and the boundary was changed accordingly.
