Township of Tonganoxie

Tonganoxie is a civil township situated in the southwestern part of the county of Leavenworth, state of Kansas, United States of America. It is bounded on the north by the township of Alexandria, on the northeast by the township of High Prairie, on the east by the township of Stranger, on the south by the township of Reno, and on the west by the county of Jefferson (including the townships of Sarcoxie and Union).

History

Tonganoxie was organized on 1 April 1867. It was named after a Delaware chief. The new civil township encompassed parts of townships 10 and 11 south, of ranges 20 and 21 east of the Sixth Principal Meridian. It was taken from the south end of the township of Alexandria. In 1869, the south end of Tonganoxie was taken to form the new township of Reno.
