Spennithorne (#28 on map) is now a civil parish and a village in the Richmondshire District of North Yorkshire, England. The township is situated on a gentle elevation above the River Ure, 2 miles (3.2km) southeast of the market town of Leyburn (#21).

The ancient parish comprised the townships of Spennithorne, Harmby (#17) and Bellerby (#4). Spennithorne was historically a large parish of 4680 acres before Harmby and Bellerby became separate civil parishes in 1866. Following that the area was 1,303 acres. The village is overlooked by the tower of St. Michael's church. The population, according to the UK census of 2011 was 184 including the small neighbouring parish of Hutton Hang (#20) whose inhabitants numbered less than 100. Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Spennithorne was located in Leyburn Rural District. Historically, it was an ancient and ecclesiastical parish in the Hang West Wapentake.

The following description from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72 is provided by the website A Vision of Britain Through Time (University of Portsmouth Department of Geography).

"SPENNITHORNE, a township and a parish in Leyburn [registration] district, [North Riding of] Yorkshire. The township lies on the river Ure, near the Leyburn railway, 2 miles SE by E of Leyburn; and has a station on the railway, and a post-office under Bedale. Acres: 1,280. Real property: £2,457. Population: 198. Houses: 45. The parish includes two other townships, and comprises 4,680 acres. Population: 852. Houses: 191. The property is much subdivided. [Spennithorne] Hall is a chief residence. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ripon. Value: £425. Patron: M. Wyvill, Esq. The church is ancient. The [perpetual] curacy of Bellerby is a separate benefice. Hutchinson, the Hebraist, was a native."
