Hutton Hang is a hamlet and civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England, about 4 miles east of Leyburn. Nearby villages include Finghall, Akebar, Thornton Steward and Constable Burton.
Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Hutton Hang was located in Leyburn Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ecclesiastical parish of Finghall in the Hang West Wapentake. [Source needed for this.] The writer saw mention a few weeks ago that the wapentakes of Hang East and Hang West were so named because of the number of Scottish reivers (or border raiders) who were hanged there after being caught. It is possible that Hutton Hang was one of the places where this occurred. [edit] Research Tips
