Newport was, until 1974, a county borough in Wales within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire, Wales. It was re-formed in 1974 as a district municipality of the county of Gwent. In 1996 it was reconstituted as a principal area within Wales. The county borough of Newport was granted city status in 2002 to mark Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee.

The City of Newport, which includes rural areas as well as the built up area, is the seventh most populous unitary authority in Wales.

The WeRelate page Newport, Monmouthshire describes the history of the town in much greater detail, as does Wikipedia.

NOTE: Newport (principal area), Wales should only be used as a place for an event occurring after 1996. Otherwise use Newport, Monmouthshire (until 1974) or Newport, Gwent for the period 1974-1996.

The following is a list of communities within the City of Newport. Those in italics are not included in WeRelate but have a description in Wikipedia.
