Lochalsh is a parish facing Loch Carron and Loch Alsh and beyond that, the Isle of Skye. It stretches inland as far as Loch Monar. It is located in the Highland Council Area, some 28 miles (45 km) south of Gairloch and 29 miles (47 km) east of Portree. It includes 3 small offshore islands. Prior to 1975 the parish was located in the old county of Ross and Cromarty, which was replaced in that year by the Highland Region and in 1996 by the unitary authority named the Highland Council Area. The parish has an area of 205 sq. km (79.1 sq. miles) and includes the settlements of Kyle of Lochalsh and Plockton and a number of smaller places, namely Achmore, Ardelve, Ardnarff, Auchtertyre, Avernish, Badicaul, Balmacara, Drumbuie, Duirinish, Erbusaig, Nostie, Sallachy and Stromeferry. Wikipedia does not include an article on the parish of Lochalsh, but does have an article on Loch Alsh, the loch on which it is based and the lands around it, and also on the village of Kyle of Lochalsh, the principal settlement of the area. Until recently part of the District of Skye and Lochalsh, Lochalsh is now part of the Wester Ross, Strathpeffer & Lochalsh ward of the Highland Council. The entire ward had a population of just 11,454 in 2006.
