Gairloch (Scottish Gaelic: Geàrrloch, "Short Loch") is a village, civil parish and community on the shores of Loch Gairloch in Wester Ross, in the Highland Council Area of Scotland. For more information, see the EN Wikipedia article Gairloch.
[edit] The ParishGairloch is a parish facing the Atlantic Ocean now located in the Highland Council Area, about 19 miles (30 km) southwest of Ullapool. It includes 4 small offshore islands. Prior to 1975 the parish was located in the old county of Ross and Cromarty, which was replaced in that year by the Highland Region and in 1996 by the unitary authority named the Highland Council Area. The parish of Gairloch has an area of 874.2 sq. km (337.5 sq. miles) and includes the villages of Melvaig, Poolewe and Kinlochewe, and has a population of 950. There are no railway lines and the nearest airport on the mainland is Inverness. There are, however, numerous small settlements on the sea coast and on the shores of Loch Ewe and Loch Maree: Achgarve, Auchtercairn, Aultbea, Aultgrishin, Badachro, Big Sand, Carn Dearg, Cove, Craig, First Coast, Second Coast, Inveran, Heights of Kinlochewe, Laide, Letterewe, Little Gruinard, Londubh, Lonemore, Mellon Charles, Mellon Udrigle, Mial, Naast, Opinan, Ormiscaig, Port Henderson, Redpoint, Shieldaig, Slattadale, South Erradale, Talladale and Tuirnaig.
