Kirkbymoorside Rural District was an administrative division of the North Riding of Yorkshire based on the town of Kirkbymoorside (#11 on map). It existed from 1894 until 1974. Like its westerly neighbour, Helmsley Rural, the northern part of Kirkbymoorside Rural District was located in the hilly area known as the Yorkshire Moors. Many of the large long parishes were very sparsely populated.
In 1934 there were some exchanges of civil parishes with Pickering Rural District. At the same time, due to the sparseness of population, the parish of Bransdale (#2 on map) expanded west and south absorbing the parishes of Bransdale West Side (#3) and part of Farndale Low Quarter (#6). The remainder of Farndale Low Quarter was merged with Farndale West Side (#7). (All these alterations are marked on the map by dotted boundaries in place of solid lines.)
Since the municipal reorganization of 1974, the area covered by Kirkbymoorside Rural District has been located in the administrative district of Ryedale, North Yorkshire.
