Village of Caldwell

Caldwell is a village (incorp. 1870) situated along West Fork Duck Creek in the county of Noble, state of Ohio, United States of America. It was platted in 1854 to be the new county seat and has remained so ever since. It was named in honor of Samuel and Joseph Caldwell, the original owners of the land on which the town was platted.

History

The first courts of the county were held at the town of Olive (a part of present day Caldwell) until November 1851, after which they were held at Sarahsville, the newly established county seat. Agitation began at once to re-establish the county seat. On 29 April 1854 the state's general assembly enacted a law allowing a vote in the county at the next annual election. In October the voters narrowly approved locating the county seat in Olive Township. On 6 December 1854 a bond of $40,000 was given by Samuel Caldwell and others for the donation of the tract of land, and two resolutions were passed by the county commissioners to authorize the survey of a new county seat to be named Caldwell.

The tract of land selected for the county seat, which was deeded by Samuel Caldwell to the county commissioners on 2 June 1857, is thus described:

Beginning at the place where the Lancaster and Louisville road crosses the west line of the northeast quarter of section 3, in township number 6, of range 9 of lands sold at Zanesville, Ohio; thence north on said west line 28 rods; thence east, 29 rods; thence south, 28 rods; thence west 29 rods to the place of beginning.

Caldwell was surveyed and platted 20–21 December 1854 by George Bell, deputy county surveyor, for the proprietors, Samuel and Joseph Caldwell. The original plat consisted of forty-eight lots and embraced 11.5 acres, including the public square.

The town was incorporated by act of the county commissioners 4 February 1870 (after a petition dated 12 November 1869). After approval by voters in an election held 8 April 1872, Caldwell was made an incorporated village of the second class.
