Budleigh Salterton is a small town on the coast in East Devon, England, 15 miles south-east of Exeter. It is situated within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a major part of the electoral ward of Budleigh. The ward population at the 2011 census was 5,967.

The area covered by Budleigh Salterton was part of the ancient division called East Budleigh Hundred. It was created as a civil parish in 1894 from East Budleigh civil parish and expanded by a part of Littleham civil parish in 1896. It became an urban district in 1894. It ceased being an urban district and became part of the East Devon District in 1974.


The birthplace of Walter Raleigh is a couple of miles to the north, at Hayes Barton, near East Budleigh and Budleigh Salterton is the location for the painting The Boyhood of Raleigh (image in Wikipedia) by Sir John Everett Millais. Wikipedia lists more people from the 20th century.
