Person talk:Jabez Howland (2)

name of widow [2 January 2013]

Long abstracts of the probate documents are given in Mayflower Descendant, p. 21:146-151, and they do not ever specify the given name of the widow, although there is one unidentified reference to the house of a "Mrs Yetmercey Howland". Do not have access to RIGR. --Jrich 17:43, 1 January 2013 (EST)

According to the "Silver Book" for the younger children of John1 Howland, Josiah3 Howland, son of Jabez2, married Yetmercy Shove who died after 21 May 1760, daughter of George and Hannah (Bacon) (Walley) Shove. The identification of Mary Carder, widow of Richard Greene as the second wife of Jabez3 and her date of death are from pp. 91-92 of the Greene genealogy cited on p. 40 of the above-mentioned Howland "Silver Book", the Greene genealogy having cited Bristol Records. I'm not sure if this fully addresses your concern.--jaques1724 01:15, 2 January 2013 (EST)
My concern is that the abstract on this page names his widow as Patience. Was that an assumption of the abstract's author? --Jrich 09:15, 2 January 2013 (EST)
Your comment about abutting landowner is very good, and reinvigorates an initial concern when I reviewed this page: namely there is no sign of a widow! The adminstratrixes are daughters, and no document is cited that talks about the widow's thirds. There is a payment to widow Howland, but again, nothing to really indicate she is the widow. Intentions didn't always become marriages... --Jrich 19:43, 2 January 2013 (EST)
Point well taken. However, the Bristol record cited in the Greene genelaogy says that "Mother Howland died Apr. 13 1761 Aet. 83 y. 6 m. 22 d." I think it's just as likely that there was a marriage contract, which is probably lost, where his was his, hers was hers, and she waived dower. For what its worth, none of the post 1732 events abstracted in the silver book mention a widow of any name of Jabez--jaques1724 20:21, 2 January 2013 (EST).
