Undocumented Supposition [7 November 2008]

(Had been in notes on person page; moved to TALK since it's supposition.)

From Jackson Gregory <jakko -at- foxislands.net>: Eliz Gregory, dau of Henry, m. Richard Webb and presided over his estate in 1665. Her siblings were baptized at St. Peter’s parrish, Nottingham -- far away and about 20 years after Marvin’s wife would have had to have been born.

More Notes on Elizabeth (-----) Marvin and Elizabeth (-----) (Grant) Webb [6 March 2012]

It appears unlikely that Matthew Marvin's wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Gregory of Nottingham, Springfield and Stratford. The following notes are provided in hopes that someone will come up with additional data regarding the wives of Seth Grant/Richard Webb and of Matthew Marvin.

  • Matthew and Elizabeth (-----) Marvin's first child was baptized at Great Bentley, co. Essex, 15 September 1622 indicating that they were married no later than 1621 and that Elizabeth was born about 1601 but possibly as late as 1604.
  • Coddington estimates that Henry Gregory was born probably in Nottinghamshire and presumably between 1580 and 1590.
  • Nottingham is roughly 150 miles from Great Bentley.
  • Grant Gregory (Coddington called his Gregory genealogy "an excellent book") estimates John Gregory's birth as between 1612 and 1615; Judah Gregory about 1618; no estimated date of birth for Elizabeth.
  • [also from Grant Gregory's genealogy] Elizabeth [(-----) (Grant) Webb], in 1677, employed "her beloved brother, John Gregory, to make an agreement" with the Butlers, they "laying claim to the estate of her husband Richard Webb." On Apr. 7, 1669, Elizabeth conveyed to her brother John, with the consent of the Butlers) all her estate, he to maintain her the rest of her life. John was her adm., when 14 May 1681/82, …
  • Bartholomew Barnard of Hartford received £15 from the estate of Elizabeth Webb in right of his wife (Sarah Birchard-living at that time) and his father-in-law (presumably Thomas Birchard, also living at Martha's Vinyard). The nature of the relationship is not apparent.--jaques1724 23:51, 5 March 2012 (EST)
"GREGORY, ELIZABETH. Probably daughter or granddaughter of Henry Gregory. B. about 1604. M. Matthew Marvin as first wife. D. in 1642 (1640-7) at Hartford, Conn. Abigail Marvin was their daughter." Bouton, Boughton and Farnam Families, 141. No source(s) cited.
I encourage you then:
  • Create an Elizabeth Unknown page, to serve as the wife of Matthew Marvin
  • Split appropriate content in the Elizabeth Gregory page off to Elizabeth Unknown (for example, the cite of Savage).
  • Create a "Disputed Lineages" section on the pages of BOTH Elizabeths, each noting the other, and indicating that some researchers merge the two individuals, but the best present evidence is that they are not the same.

I will be uploading Elizabeth Gregory, daughter of Henry Gregory and wife of Seth Grant and Richard Webb within the next month so so. Therefore, I am going to unlink this Elizabeth Gregory (wife of Matthew Marvin) from Henry Gregory and indicate that her parentage is unknown. I'll add a note to add the nomerge template and Disputed Lineaages section after my upload.--DataAnalyst 12:36, 6 May 2012 (EDT)
