Person talk:Abigail Davis (2)

Parents of Abigail Davis [22 November 2015]

According to The Great Migration 1634-1635, v2, C-F, William Davis, p 316-18, Abigail was the daughter of William DAVIS, the locksmith, of Boston and his first unknown wife. Various records appear to support this.

Settlement of William's estate mentioned his eldest son, other son, eldest daughter, and younger daughter by his former wife.

The name of his second wife was known to be Mary from a record dated 7 Jul 1645 by "John Condell [sic] of Boston and Mary his wife" selling the their house to William Davis (son of Wm the locksmith). Then on 9 Oct 1645 (quote): William Davis petitioned the court for assurance that his mother, who had the estate of William Davis, including the house and lands, in her hands and in the hands of "John Cowdell by marriage with her," would pay the portions due to him and his "brother and sisters," this portion to be acknowledged as separate from the property William Davis had just purchased from his step-mother and her husband. But the only source I've seen for the surname of William's second wife Mary was as MEARS in Torrey.

It was this John Cowdell and Abigail's step-mother Mary who forced her to marry Richard Ussell. But by 1666, Mary must have died because an indictment by the RI general court named Joan wife of John Cowdell.

Boston records list the following children for William Davis and wife Mary: "Thomas sonne of Wm. Davies & Mary his wife borne 15 (1) 1636 & Dyed 24 (5) 1638" "Aaron sonne of Wm. Davies & Mary his wife borne 20 (5) 1638. & Dyed the 31 (8) 1639." "Trine sonne of Wm. Davies & Mary his wife borne 10 (6) 1642." "Abigail Daughter of Wm. Davies & Mary his wife borne 31 (8) 1635 & Dyed 24 (12) 1639." "Thomas sonne of Wm. Davies Dyed in the 5 mo: 1638." "John sonne of Wm. Davies Dyed 20 (1) 1640."

So the Abigail who married Edward Richmond, cannot be the daughter of Mary, and was probably one of the children by William Davis' first wife.
