Winthrop's father, Dr. Field, was married to a daughter of the well-to-do Ward family. Winthrop graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard in three years. His health was poor, and he was rejected by the Army in World War I for ulcers. With his wife he tried farmin in NH, for his health, but failed at it. He worked in Providence as a farm manager, moving his family to Cranston RI, and subsequently managed a farm in Pomfret, CT, which later became his and Pauline's.
