Winifred Clara Carter was born on 27th June 1918 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of Sarah Ann Carter, formerly West, and her husband Arthur Carter, a machine shop inspector. At the outbreak of the Second World War the Winifred was living with her parents and sister at 70 Boyle Street in Luton and working as a milliner. It is quite likely she had lived at that address her whole life to that point, as her father had been listed there in the 1918 electoral register. In 1945 Winifred married William Samuel Hodges. They do not appear to have had any children. Electoral registers show that they lived at 246 North Street in Luton from at least 1947 onwards. They were married for about nineteen years. William died in 1964, aged 55. The 1966 electoral register only lists Winifred at 246 North Street. Two years later Winifred married again, to a widower named Reuben Lewis, who had two adult children from his first marriage. He had been a near neighbour of Winifred for some years before the war; he had lived at 76 Boyle Street with his first wife from the late 1920s to the late 1930s, before moving to 28 Somerset Avenue some time between 1937 and 1939. After their marriage Winifred and Reuben remained at 28 Somerset Avenue for the rest of their lives. Winifred and Reuben were married for about sixteen years. Winifred died in 1982, aged 63. Reuben outlived her by three years. References
