William Samuel Hodges' origins have yet to be established. His first confirmed sighting is in 1945 when he married Winifred Clara Carter in the Luton area. They do not appear to have had any children.

William died on 20th January 1964, when he was said to be 55 years old. He had been living at 246 North Street Luton immediately before his death. Winifred survived him by eighteen years, and remarried two years after his death.
