William Worvell was baptised on 10th December 1775 at Naunton in Gloucestershire, son of Hannah Worvell, formerly Turner, and her husband Robert Worvell. William’s mother died when he was just over a year old. William’s father died in 1790, when William was about fifteen years old.
By 1808 William had left Naunton and moved about eight miles north to Stanway. He married a widow called Jane Rogers, formerly King, there on 25th October 1808, when he was 32 years old. Jane had a young son from her first marriage.
William and Jane went on to have a daughter in 1809 and a son in 1811, both baptised at Stanway.
Jane died in 1813 aged 29, and was buried at Stanway.
Just under two years later William married again. His second wife was Ann Hopkins, who was also from Stanway, but they married at Bretforton in Worcestershire, about ten miles north of Stanway. They married there on 19th June 1815 and were both said to be living at Bretforton at the time of the marriage.
William and Ann returned to Stanway shortly after their marriage, going on to have three daughters baptised there between 1816 and 1822. These daughters’ baptisms describe William as a labourer and “under gardener” on their daughters’ baptisms. The most likely place in the area big enough to employ not just gardeners but under gardeners was Stanway House.
William’s first known grandchild was born in 1839.
The 1841 and 1851 censuses both find William, Ann and one of their daughters living in the Church Stanway area of Stanway. In 1841 William was described as an agricultural labourer, whilst in 1851 he was called a gardener’s labourer.
William died in 1858, aged 82. He was buried at Stanway on 7th February 1858. Ann survived him by eight years.

Whilst no named connection has been found, this baptism has been linked to the William Worvell who married Ann Hopkins on the basis that in the 1851 census he claimed to have been born around 1775 in Naunton. No evidence has been found to suggest that the William baptised in 1775 died young.
