Facts and Events
Information from Richard G. Tullis: William Tullis served in Captain Joseph Bloomfield's Company (Third Battalion) of the Continental Army's "New Jersey Line." This company was recruited in Glouster, Salem and Cumberland Counties during February 1775. William was listed as a private in a muster roll of the company as recorded in the diary of Ebenezer Elmer, an ensign. Privates enlisted for one year at $5 per month and were allowed instead of bounty, "a felt hat, a pair of yarn-stockings and a pair of shoes" but were responsible for furnishing their own arms. After joining with four other companies that had been stationed on Staten Island, William's company proceeded by way of Elizabethtown to New York. On May 2, 1775 the company was mustered and were reportedly pronounced by General George Washington "the flower of all the North American forces." |
