William Thompson was baptised on 11th March 1810 at Codicote in Hertfordshire, son of John and Diana Thompson.
On 20th October 1834, aged 24, he married Hannah Swallow in the nearby village of Wheathampstead. They settled in Wheathampstead after their marriage, having seven children together there between 1835 and 1850.
In 1841 the family was living at Marshalls Heath, a hamlet to the west of Wheathampstead, and William was working as an agricultural labourer and Hannah as a plaiter. By 1851 they were living on Wheathampstead Hill, the main road leading out of the village to the south. In 1851 William was described as a straw factor. The 1861 census simply gives their address as 'Village' in Wheathampstead and describes William as a labourer.
William died at the age of 54. He was buried at Wheathampstead on 4th April 1864. Hannah survived him by twenty years.
