James Thompson was born on 14th June 1837 at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire, son of a straw plaiter named Hannah Thompson, formerly Swallow, and her husband William Thompson, an agricultural labourer and straw factor. James appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living with his parents and siblings in different parts of Wheathampstead parish. He has yet to be researched after 1851.
