Notes from the Duck Creek Monthly Meeting Records, Henry County, Indian November 25, 1852 A complaint was made by the Duck Creek MM against William and Elizabeth Swain for marrying contrary to discipline. (Both parties were members of the Society of Friends and were married by a civil ceremony.) On December 23, 1852 they were condemned for their misconduct. May 24, 1855 A complaint was made by the Duck Creek MM against William Henry for neglected attendance of meeting and because he has opened his house for a fiddling and dancing frolic. On July 26, 1855 he was disowned. Approx. 1858 William moved his family to Iowa, there joining his two children to the Bear Creek Monthly Meeting, Dallas County, Iowa. as missing in action by order of Maj. Griffiths Affidavit found in NARA Civil War Pension Records. State of Iowa, County of Dallas Court, dated August 20, 1869, by Wesley Wright. To quote part; " that he was 1st. lieutenant of Co. H., 39th Iowa Vols. to which company and Regiment belonged William H. Swain, that the said William H. Swain was with his company on the 7th day of July 1863, at Corinth, Miss., when and where a number of the men of the said company, among whom was the said Swain, was captured by the enemy, that the said Swain never afterward joined his said company, nor was he ever afterward heard from officially." " Deponent further says that he never learned from any of the men who were captured with the said Swain, what became of him, and he is of the opinion that he, the said Swain was killed, on having been captured and escaped, attempting to escape was killed."
