Notes from the Duck Creek Monthly Meeting Records, Henry County, Indian January 21, 1855 A complaint was made by the Duck Creek MM against Elizabeth Swain for attending a public ball and participating therein by joining in the dance. On March 25,1858 she was disowned. January 26, 1860 Elizabeth Swain, Bear Creek MM, Iowa has been given consent of this meeting to receive membership again.
Elizabeth M. Thomas applied for pension for two of her sons fathered by William H. Swain under the provisions made by the Act of Congress, approved July 14, 1862. She could not apply for pension for herself as she had remarried to William P. Thomas. Documents: 1. Declaration of Minor Children for Pension. State of Illinois, County of Cook, October 12, 1868. Elizabeth M. Thomas ..........................resident of Chicago. Claim for two minor children; A. Arthur W. Swain .......................born; October 24, 1856 B. Erwin Mason Swain ................born; November 23, 1860 Witnesses; Joanna Clark and Mary Nicholson 2. Affidavit from the court of the County of Cook, State of Illinois, October 12, 1868, that Elizabeth M. Thomas was not making a claim for pension for Loring R. Swain, first child of William H. Swain and his wife Elizabeth, as Loring R. Swain had been adopted by his maternal grandmother Cynthia Pickering. 3. Affidavit from the court of the State of Indiana, County of Henry, October 29, 1868, that Cynthia Pickering has no interest in the claim by guardian Elizabeth M. Thomas for Loring R. Swain for pension. Signed; Cynthia Pickering Affirmed; Caleb Bond JP 4. Adjutant Generals Office, November 18, 1868. Application for Pension No. 166.650. This form gives all the military information on file for William H. Swain, plus a note at the end. Note; Taken prisoner near Corinth, Miss., July 7, 1863. Last record of him, and no evidence of death on file at this office. Investigation fails to elicit any further information concerning him.
