He was born 12 September 1847 in Trigg County, Kentucky. He enlisted in the Union Army in the Civil War, serving as a private in Company C, 7th Kentucky Cavalry. On his return home after the war he married Miss Seretha Sizemore, and they had . They were the parents of seven boys and one girl. They moved to Williamson County in January 1883. Seretha died 30 July 1898 and William married Mrs. Jane Brown January 1899. She died 1 November 1921, and William then married Mrs. Tabitha Griffith.
