William (Bill) was a stone mason by trade.

:: :: In approximately 1858, or so, he took his family, which consisted of his wife, Betsey, and his two young sons Daniel Lyman, and Winfield Scott , to Gilmanton, WI. It is said that he made his way to the Ohio River where they took a riverboat down the Ohio, to the Mississippi, where they ended up at whatever riverboat stop was convenient to Gilmanton, WI. He then proceeded to have 2 more children, while living in Gilmanton. In approximately 1865 (Win was 10), William moved his family to Pleasant Valley, MN, in Mower County. Here 3 more children were born. My father, Burt J., always told of how his father, Winfield, was 10 years old, and therefore, one of the big kids, and he walked alongside the oxcart, all the way from Gilmanton, WI, to Pleasant Valley, MN (except for, possibly the crossing of the Mississippi).
:: :: "William came from Vermont with his family to Gilmanton, WI by riverboat "up the Ohio River" (quote from Lucy Stiles, wife of William's son, William Stiles, who used to hear Grandpa (William Lyman Stiles) tell of coming to Wisconsin and Minnesota) to the Mississippi to either La Crosse, WI, or Winona, MN."
:: :: (There is a family story passed down that I would like to enter here. The story is that there was a fellow that used the name of this William Stiles, that rode with the outlaw, Jesse James. He is said to have been raised by this William, and taken in as an orphan. His real name is supposed to have been William "Bill" Chadwell. He, however used the name "Bill" Stiles. He is the same "Bill" Stiles that was killed in the famous Northfield, MN, First National Bank robbery. I have not been able to coordinate that story with actual records. I see no census records of this guy living in Pleasant Valley, MN. My great-grandfather, this William Stiles, moved from Gilmanton, WI, to Pleasant Valley, MN, in about the year 1865, and the raid on the Northfield bank was in 1876. In the death photos of Bill Stiles (Chadwell), he appears to be about 25 to 35 years of age. That might mean that he lived with the Stiles family in Wisconsin. Again, I have no proof of his existence, with this family.)
