William Bayard Shields, came from Delaware to Mississippi when a young man and here married a Miss Benoist, who belonged to a distinguished French family, her father being a French royalist. Mr. Shields was an eminent scholar and a celebrated attorney. He was the first United States district attorney for Mississippi, and he it was who prosecuted Aaron Burr.
