The elder Shields was a man of fine literary attainments, having been educated at Jefferson college, Washington, Miss., and under the private tutorage of the late distinguished S.S. Prentiss. Some years after his marriage Mr. Shields settled near Natchez, in Adams county, and became not only a prominent planter but a very influential citizen, belonging to one of the first families of the county.
