Family Relationships

William's second and third wives, Isabella Morrison and Amanda Chick, were first cousins. Their mothers, Cynthia Burke and Lavinia Burke respectively, were daughters of Jonathan Burke, who was from Ireland.

William and Amanda (Chick) Shaffer did not have any children. They informally adopted Charles B Morrison, who was a nephew of Isabella, being the son of her brother, John Morrison. Charlie was raised as the Shaffers' son, but kept the Morrison name. He is sometimes erroneously referred to as "Charlie Shaffer."

Since William had no children as heirs, his estate was hotly contested. The case went to the Louisiana State Supreme Court.[5]
