The 1820 census revealed William Shaffer of Fairfield, South Carolina was a farmer. His household included three white males and one female under the age of ten; three white females between 10 and 16 years of age; one free white male and two white females between 16 and 26 years of age and one white male and one white female between 26 and 45 years of age. There were four individuals involved in agriculture and one involved in manufacturing. William owned one male slave over the age of 45 and two female slaves between 26 and 45 years of age.
