His father probably died when he was a boy, as there is a record for a Rachel Saunders that fits in the 1840 Daviess County, Indiana census. In the Mexican War, he was recruited by Capt. Ford in 1847, and was a member of the U.S. Dragoons, but only got as far as the St. Louis barracks before peace was declared.[1]

By 1850, he was married to a girl from a Daviess County, Indiana family, but there were no Sanders living nearby. In 1860, he is only a laborer with $50 in personal estate.

During the Civil War, according to the 1890 census, he was a member of Company G, 4th Indiana Infantry. He enlisted 28 Sept 1861, and was discharged 20 Apr 1863.[11] His pension record indicates he was discharged for an injured back that occured by building a bridge in KY, and that plagued him for the rest of his life. [1]

After the War, he lived in Daviess Co til about 1868, then moved to Barry Co, MO. He lived in Barry and Lawrence Counties until he returned to Indiana after death of his second wife Susan to marry her sister Sarah.

William H. Sanders of Aurora, MO enlisted in Co. G, 42nd Indiana, on 28 Sep 1861 and was discharged 20 Apr 1863. He is drawing a pension for a spine injury.

  12. William Henry Harrison was a general named governor of the Indiana territory in 1801. He ran the government out of Vincennes for 10 years. In the War of 1812, he was commander of the NW Territory and fought the Battle of Detroit. He went home to Ohio and served in the house and senate before running for president in 1840 under the banner “Tippecanoe and Tyler, too”. He fell ill during his inaugural and died after a month. William Sanders' parents lived in Missouri in 1828, and thus would have no obvious reason to name their son after an Ohio congressman. There may be some military connection with William Sanders, Sr., or it may be that the second "H" (which rarely appears in contemporary records) was made up after the fact.
